"The Revolution That Started in Florence, Ala."

Titled "The Revolution That Began in Florence, Alabama," the opening lecture by author and music critic, Peter Guralnick, will provide an introduction to Sam Phillips, a Florence native who later became a recording legend in Memphis as the producer of Sun Studios. Like the great jazz musician, W.C. Handy, also from Florence, Phillips is part of a collective of individuals whose contributions and achievements create a musical heritage trail connecting Alabama to Memphis, Tenn.

Following his presentation will be a panel discussion developed by University of Alabama humanities scholar, Dr. James C. Hall who holds a Ph.D. in American Studies. Colleagues Terry Pace and Robert Palmer will moderate the discussion and contribute as panelists. Pace and Palmer are local journalists and music historians with associations to the University of North Alabama. In summary, Dr. Hall, Pace, and Palmer will serve as the three scholars on the panel discussion.
They will be joined by veteran musician David Hood and his son Patterson Hood who is a member of the Drive-By Truckers; veteran musician, Jimmy Johnson and his son Jay Johnson; and recording specialists, Rick Hall and his son Rodney Hall. The musicians, many of whom are now legends of Alabama's music traditions, will share a personal perspective on the development of the Muscle Shoals Sound based on experiences in the recording studios and other work during their career.
Professionals and scholars in the audience will include historians, folklife scholars, authors, archivists, and recording and media specialists.
This program made possible by grants from the Alabama Humanities Foundation and Alabama State Council on the Arts with sponsorship provided by the W.C. Handy Festival, the University of North Alabama, and the Alabama Folkife Association.
